Motorola PEBL U6 Steel Teal Phone (Unlocked Intl. Version) no U.S. Warranty
Binding: Wireless Phone Accessory
Manufacturer: Motorola
Product Description:
This unlocked cell phone can be used with a GSM network service provider and it provides quad-band connectivity (850 MHz, 900 MHz, 1800 MHz, 1900 MHz). It does not come with a SIM card, and it requires that you provide a SIM card for usage with your selected service provider.
Amazon.com Hands-on Review:
Motorola's PEBL U6 is the second model in Motorola's high-end "four-letter word" line, following the super popular RAZR V3. The PEBL takes some of the same materials and technologies used in the RAZR, and packages them into a completely different kind of clamshell handset. While the RAZR is all about thin, sharp angles, the PEBL is more about design, making use of soft curves and smooth lines throughout.

Screen shots from the PEBL.

The graphite black finish on the smooth, rounded exterior of the PEBL U6 manages to appear very glossy while still having a visual texture to it. The effect is very cool in person, but the downside is that the phone is an absolute magnet for fingerprints. But that's just the cost of high fashion, isn't it?

The PEBL's biggest claim to fame is perhaps not its shape and look, but its unique opening mechanism. A series of custom hinges, a dampening device, and some magnets allow the PEBL U6 to be opened up one-handed in a very smooth, elegant manner. When holding the device, you simply use your thumb to pull the top cover towards the bottom of the device a bit, which releases the magnetic latch that keeps the spring-loaded opening mechanism at bay. At that point you simply move your thumb out of the way and let the spring do its job. The motion is smooth and slow enough for the device to maintain its balance.

Once open, the PEBL's unusual keypad is ready for use. The directional controller and its center select button are very typical of mobile phones, but the rest of the keypad builds on some of the unique design elements we saw in the RAZR's keypad. The PEBL's keypad and softkeys are completely flat. The actual buttons are hidden behind a single sheet of metal that has a bit of give to it, allowing finger pressure to make its way to the switches underneath. Thin strips of translucent material let light filter in from behind, just as they do on the RAZR's keypad. The net result is a very distinct-looking keypad that probably sacrifices a little too much functionality in the name of fashion. Individual keys are simply much easier to find and press, even if they don't look nearly as sharp.

The inner workings of the PEBL U6 seem to be stock Motorola. The handset comes in two variations, each of which supports three GSM frequency bands and EDGE data. The North American version supports the 850, 900, 1800, and 1900 Mhz bands. The internal display is a 262k-color unit with a pixel resolution of 176x220. The battery should be good for over 6 and a half hours of talk time, or up to as long as 10 days of standby time according to Motorola. Bluetooth support more than makes up for a lack of infrared connectivity. The only aspect that seems a bit dated is the PEBL's VGA camera. For a high-end handset like the PEBL, you certainly would expect more resolution in the camera.

Other highlights include 5 MB of internal storage that can be used for MP3 or MIDI ringtones, photos and video clips, and downloaded Java games and applications. The addition of speaker-independent voice dialing and voice commands are welcome, and the PEBL's relatively low weight of 3.7 ounces (110 g) makes it quite pocketable.

Pros:

  • Unique design
  • Automatic opening mechanism
  • Bluetooth

Cons:

  • Low-resolution camera
  • Difficult keypad

Motorola's PEBL U6 is a unique handset. Where it goes, stares and longing gazes will follow. It might not have the full range of high-end features inside, but for the see-and-be-seen crowd, it probably has everything to get the job done.

Good product, some service questions
Ordered blue, nothing arrived by delivery date, cancelled order, and slightly later same day that cancelled order "HassleFreeCell" shipped the item in different color, then claimed had been trying to make contact to advise problem with availability of color ordered. Apart from being delivered late and being wrong color actual phone is good. Subsequent follow up by "HassleFreeCell" was satisfactory.

Just Ok....
I like the look of, but reception is bad most of the time.... My old cheap Nokia has a way better reception wherever I am...But the battery life is the best I ever had. I guess is good where you have a strong signal, otherwise is a problem.

Basic
Its a phone. It makes calls, it sends text messages, and can even take some pictures. If you're sharp, you can upload a custom ringtone to the phone.
Can be pretty slow...typing a text message takes a while, since the text doesn't show up for half a second to a second. Address book searching and scrolling is similar; don't press a button a few times to scroll down one thing, you will end up at the bottom.

No bluetooth or USB connection
I learned the hard way that not all phones have bluetooth. I went to sync up my phone book with my computer and... hey, where's the bluetooth?! So, I though, ok, no problem, I'll just sync over the USB connection. On a mac, that doesn't work either! The mac iSync program doesn't support this model. So, if you don't mind not being able to sync your phone numbers, this phone might work fine for you, otherwise, get something with bluetooth.

NOT QUAD BAND
Product in perfect condition, but not a quad band as described when i bougth it, I need the phone to use it in another country and didnt work, very unsatisfied and can't returned because i'm not at the US.

great phone for the price
i bought this cell for my mom as she said she wanted a simple phone.. this phone does the job its nothing fancy but it works. i would recommend this phone to anyone who is looking for a replacement phone. i only rated it 4 stars because it does not have bluetooth.

Really very nice Phone
The green color on the web page has a more 'sage' look, the actual phone is slightly more yellow-green, and metallic, which came as a disappointment, however, I really like this phone - it is a beautiful design inside and out. I have only used standard texting and call features, but it is very robust, easy to use and to notch design.

great phone
this is a great little phone..my carrier is cingular...and the phone is t-mobile..but no worries...i just put my sim card in and it works...
only one minor problem..i cant access the web to download ringtones..but i really dont care about that at all..

best motorola since v60
Honestly, I own this phone in black and I've had it for a year and it is a great phone. I hated my razr and bought this unlocked from Motorola's website. Other than the issues of having to program all the gateways and codes for your carrier so that the texting and multimedia messages will work, everything is great. I highly recommend this phone.

Amazon.com Product Description:
You've probably seen the wildly popular Motorola RAZR V3 in someone's hand before. With the quad-band GSM RAZR V3i, Motorola has made it even better. The sexy design is still here, as is the all-metal construction. This time, though, the phone boasts an updated and streamlined design, enhanced video capture and playback capabilities, a 1.23 megapixel camera, and a hot-swappable MicroSD memory card slot.

Put a little luxury in your pocket with the RAZR V3i Dolce & Gabbana.
And now when you thought it couldn't get any better, Dolce & Gabbana and Motorola have partnered up to release the latest version of the v3i: The RAZR V3i D & G. The phone unites the elegance and unique design of Motorola V3i with the individual style and attitude of D & G. The V3i DG features the famous RAZR slim shape, includes an anodized aluminum gold finish that reflects your impeccable taste, and its music player runs on Apple's popular iTunes software.

Design
At .55 inches thick, the RAZR V3i is virtually the same thickness as the original RAZR. And like the original RAZR, the phone's design takes the standard clamshell form factor to the next level with an impressive, fully-anodized aluminum construction. A large 176 x 220 color display with 262,000 colors dominates the inside of the top cover. The outside cover of the handset sports a supplementary 96 x 80 full-color display that can display caller ID pictures, time, call information, battery and signal strength, and more. The 1.23 megapixel camera lens is housed above this display. Up/down buttons are placed on the left side for volume control.

Most of the phone's features and on-screen menus are controlled by a five-way center button on the handset's backlit control pad, which is precision cut from a single sheet of nickel-plated copper alloy. A mini-USB port is provided, which, while useful for fast data transfer, can also be used with compatible USB stereo headsets. Note that the phone does not have a standard 2.5mm headset jack.

And don't forget, Dolce & Gabbana and Motorola wouldn't think of offering a phone without making available a special edition gold plated Motorola Bluetooth H700 Headset. Coordinate your phone and Bluetooth headset in style.

Calling Features
The RAZR V3i's internal phone book can hold up to 1000 contacts while the phone's picture ID system allows you to assign pictures to your most common callers. The phone also supports polyphonic ringtones as well as MP3 ringers, allowing you to use portions of your favorite songs to alert you to incoming calls. For times when you want to be discreet, there's a vibrating alert. A built-in speakerphone makes it easy to talk without having the phone to your ear while voice activated dialing makes calling your friends, family and associates as easy as saying their names. Speaker-independent technology allows any speaker to dial numbers with the voice dialing system. And because the RAZR V3i is Bluetooth enabled, wireless headsets can be configured with the phone for total handsfree operation.

A 1.3 megapixel camera at the top of the phone's cover bridges the gap between phones and quality digital cameras.
Messaging, Internet, and Tools
The RAZR V3i is a messaging and wireless Internet powerhouse. Support is built in for sending and receiving pictures, text, graphics, sound and video via messages. When used in combination with the phone's built-in still and video camera, MMS opens up a whole new world of messaging fun. There's also a built-in Web browser for mobile Web downloads and browsing via your carrier's GPRS-based data service. If you need email on the go, the V3i comes with an email client that supports IMAP, POP3, and SMTP email standards. iTap text entry, which is a technology that makes it easier for people to enter words and text on handsets, is built into the unit-- a plus for mobile email and text messaging users.

A number of handy software tools are bundled with the RAZR V3i including a calculator with currency converter, a calendar and an alarm clock. The phone can also be used with Motorola's Mobile Phone Tools PC application to manage and synchronize contacts, calendar and other data with your PC.

Imaging and Entertainment
The V3i's 1.3 megapixel camera bridges the gap between phones and quality digital cameras. The digital zoom-enabled camera is also designed to capture video. You can even print your shots on a Bluetooth-enabled printer. Embedded animated screensavers and full screen wallpapers are built-in so you can set up the RAZR V3i to suit your tastes. The phone supports games, as well as gaming connectivity via Bluetooth.

Into bringing your music with you everywhere you go? With the V3i D & C's hot-swappable MicroSD memory card slot, you can stylishly take all of your favorite music with you. Your music library is now limited only by how much memory you bring along. And don't forget, the V3i DC's music player runs on one of the most popular music software system's of all time-- Apple's iTunes!

D&G phone free now from dealers nationwide
do the research...reap what you sew, I got my D&G razor phone free! too muchmoney? not nuf time?

LOVE IT!
I bought this phone from Neiman Marcus when it first came out, and it's been about a year now and I have no complaints. It's an awesome phone, both in function and design. I absolutely love it and highly recommend it, especially for those fashionistas out there! It's definitely worth buying, in particular now that it is at half the price it was at when it first came out.

dolce and gabbana
I love my dolce and gabbana motorola phone; I have the bluetooth headset and eelskin case too. Come on, if you are into D&G you might as well do it right. :) The mp3 sound is great; phone is easy to use and has great features. I recommend it for those who must have.....like me!

D & G Great but not with Tmobile..........
I do love this phone, and regardless of what another review says its gold not bronze. However if you use tmobile you may have some issues. Firt when you get a voicemail message you will not get a standard alert telling you that you have a message., You get this blank weird text from '_@' no names, no text just those two characters in the 'from' line., The only way to fix this is to actually download software to hack the phones software itself because tmobile don't go out of their way to fix it or send the updates via text for the phone. Another thing, games from tmobile will not work on this phone, another issue because of tmobile lack of service, but just something to be aware of when buying this unlocked phone. Also when you get this pack ,you do not get the US power charger but rather some asian/euro charger with an adapter. There is also a weird sticker on the box sayng that as soon as you open it motorola no longer are responsible for repairs. Totally weird but anyway...how do you know if you even need repairs unless you open it? I foun this totally insane. I have had no actual damage or problems other than the issues with tmobile voicemail and game functions.
I have had mine a few months and haven't had problems with fading, however I do keep it in the eel skin case most of the time. Another thing, the battery doesn't last long on this phone, not compared to other phones I have had.
This phone looks great and does work well ...once you sort out a couple of issues.

why does this not work with Verizon Wireless

I just received my new Motorola RAZR V3i Dolce & Gabbana Phone (Unlocked)
by Motorola. I use Verizon for my Services. When I took it there to switch from 1 razor to another - they said they don't support this type of phone. Would this be true or did the salesperson even know. My current razor does not have a Sims card.

Thank you

Razr V3
I have had several Razrs over the past 5 years and still stay w/ it because of the features and ease of use. Even w/ so many new phones that have come out I would pick the Razr again and agian...

razr
wont ever buy electronic this way (purchased directly through Amazon, not a reseller). phone did arrive on time, but has started falling apart within a month.
It came without warranty, so there is no recourse.
I have no interest in doing business again with crooks.

This Cell Works Great
I bought two of these cells to replace T-Mobile's Shadow phone, which while it had great options, ate batteries to the point that we never used them. The Motorola set up for us with no problems. We inserted our sim cards and we were good to go. We've had the phones for about 3 months now and have had no problems. A charged battery lasts sometimes up to 4 days. Texting is easy and the screen and keypad work well for people who need glasses. It goes online easily and quickly and games download with no problems. Maybe we've been lucky, but so far this phone has out performed the Shadow hands down!

nice looking phone but died two weeks later
I bought this phone and only used it for about two weeks when the screen went white. The phone rings but you still can't use the screen. As this phone did not have a warranty I now have to buy another phone or pay to have it fixed.

Amazon.com Hands-On Review:

Nobody can deny that Motorola's RAZR V3 was a huge commercial success. It had a lot going for it, including that sexy and slim profile. But in spite of its success in the market, there were still some things that needed to be addressed. The newest version of the RAZR for GSM networks, the RAZR V3i, is an evolutionary upgrade to the V3. It seems quite obvious that Motorola was thinking "if it ain't broke, don't fix it" when they went about creating this upgrade.

The sleek V3i is an upgrade from the original RAZR V3.

For starters, the physical size of the V3i is the same as the V3, which is to say that it is about six tenths of an inch in thickness (about 14mm). Weight is also about the same at 3.4oz (97g). But this time around the V3i gets a new, gunmetal-gray exterior with a cool, brushed pattern on the top half of the folder design. The Motorola logo also now glows blue. Otherwise, apart from some minor cosmetic changes made to the exterior and the flat but functional keypad, physically the V3i seems pretty much the same as the V3.

The basic features are also the same, with a few exceptions. The V3i supports all four of the GSM frequency bands, so it should work most anywhere in the world (if you have international roaming on your GSM account). The V3i's internal antenna seemed to work well--call audio quality was very good and we had no problems in weak signal areas. The large 262k color display appears to be the same--still nice and bright--and the external display is also the same, meaning it is functional but not at all awe inspiring. The battery in the V3i has been upgraded a wee bit and managed to power the handset for just over 8 hours of talk time in our tests.

There is still no EDGE data support in the V3i, sadly, but the Bluetooth system is very good and supports data connections as well as headsets and car kits--though not in stereo. The camera's user interface has been updated to include a very easy system whereas the d-pad can change most all of the camera settings on the fly without the need for menus. The camera module itself has also been upgraded to a 1.2-megapixel model that generates nice looking photos with good color balance, even if the focus is a bit soft (especially for subjects closer than 4' away).

See the unlocked V3i open and closed.

Another upgrade is the inclusion of speaker-independent voice dialing and commands. With this system, there is no longer the need to train the phone for various contacts names. You just speak the command (such as "Name Dial"), and tell it the name of the contact--it's that simple and works superbly. Another change that helps in making calls is a new multi-character search mode for finding contacts, something people have been asking about for a long time. In some versions of the V3i you will also find Apple iTunes support, just like in the ROKR E1. There is a 100-song limit, though, which is a shame since the new microSD memory card slot can hold cards as large as 1 GB in size. The non-iTunes versions will not have a song limit when using the default Motorola media player.

Pros:

  • Thin and sexy
  • Good battery life
  • Bluetooth
  • Cons:

  • No EDGE support
  • Metal keypad is not for everybody
  • While not a massive upgrade, the RAZR V3i gets enough boosts in the right places to ensure its spot as one of the most popular mobile phones in the world. The added features are all very nice to have, and the hold-over features from the old V3 still work as well as they did the first time around. If you like the RAZR V3, you will probably love it in the new RAZR V3i version.

    Good phone, bad charging issues
Razr V3i is a good phone with easy to use features. The included pair of headphones work great with music and micro-SD slot gives additional storage. I am using a 2 gb micro-SD card and it works great. However, there are issues with the battery charging. When tried to charge directly with included charger, the battery never reached fully charged status even after 24 hrs of continuous charging. I have replaced the battery but the problem remains the same. I took out the battery from phone and tried charging with a desktop charger and this time it worked. Now I am using two batteries - one in phone and one on desktop charging cradle. Big pain, but this is only way to make use of money I have spent on this phone.

    A Step Forward
I can't say I had problems with this phone... being a former owner of the older version, V3. While both looked the same, the V3i have a lot of added features that, for a while confused me. But after a week of tweaking, I finally came to love the added features and was happy with it.

While it's true that this phone is not MAC-friendly, I also found out that the Phone Tools software do not recognize it as an existing product of Motorola. Extra features aside, I got this phone because of the memory expandability that the V3 lacked. I'm one phone user who doesn't use whatever extras are stashed in to make a phone worthy of one's time... so long as I could make/receive calls; send/receive text messages, and listen to a bit of music. Internet access via the phone may be nice to some but not to me. That's just added expenses to my hefty monthly bill with AT&T.

To sum it up, this phone isn't the best there is out there but useful enough for my own needs. I'd buy another of this V3i, hands down (i.e., if I happen to have the extra cash to own a second unit). With Quadband frequencies-- it makes a good phone for travel outside America. Battery life is also a big plus. Some people could downplay this phone for what lacks but not me. :D

    Unsatisfied
Don't get me wrong. This mobile phone is a good looking one but I'm disappointed because it came with a defected battery. It will charged alright and shows battery charged is complete. Now I will make just a short phone call and battery will turn red means low battery. This gets me mad. Secondly, the voice dialing command does not work for me. This would be a great feature to have if it works too. So, here all my expectations about this phone is disappointment or maybe I'm just unfortunate to get the defected one?

    Proper Context
I have been using this product for over three years, I have bought a new V3i a second time after two years of use of an old V3i. Compared to the New Motorola V9 as well as countless other new phones on the market, the V3i still retains its glamour, as the V3i was marketed as a top-notch phone. It has longer battery life than the V9 and has all the features that are necessary in a cell phone.

The durability of the V3i is also excellent. Cell phones with too many integrated electronics will be damaged easily. I had my first V3i crushed slightly by a car that drove too close to the curb. The front screen was slightly cracked, but the ballistic durability of the hard plastic is still surprising. The phone still worked perfectly. I then bought my second V3i, and fixed the old V3i. All the store had to do was replace the glass on the front screen and my old phone became as good as new again.

I prefer the unlocked International version, which has slightly different menus and features and uses Digital Audio Player instead of the Apple iTunes software.

It's pretty, it makes phone calls, and that's about it.
I have to give Motorola credit for the entire RAZR lineup, because it is definitely the coolest phone I've ever seen. It created the market and improved it on each iteration. So, design is five star, without question. The phone itself makes calls, and the speakerphone is loud, as it should be. I love the exterior LCD screen.

And that's about it for likes.

The dislikes are numerous for me, because I own a Nokia 3650, which at the time was the best phone you could get (2003). Now it's outdated, but here's some interesting points:
-my phone takes pictures of equal quality
-sound playback is equal to my phone
-I have unrestricted Java applet usage, including a MUCH larger library of available programs
-my sync manager does much more than Motorola's, including much better integration with Outlook
    -my UI doesn't suck

I've had my cell phone for five years, which is an ETERNITY for cell phones, but it's still not out-featured by this phone. I tried to get an eBook reader for a RAZR and all I could find were sites that basically make you compile a JAR file and unlock your phone to transfer it... where it may or may not run.

Contrast with my Nokia 3650: I downloaded a free eBook reader (Mobipocket) using Nokia's software (which can be downloaded for free from Nokia) and I was in business. Vendor lock-in for cell phones is a big problem for me, and maybe it is for you, too.

This is a stylish phone that epitomizes form over function.

    Phone Features
This candybar-style phone measures just 0.35 inches (9mm) thin, and it has a unique Motorola ClearVision display that helps to increase the battery life of the phone. The changeable electronic ink display (electrophoretic imaging film) is easy to read in bright sunlight or dimly lit environments from virtually any angle--just like paper. Additionally, the display is plastic, lightweight and ultra-low power, making it ideal for mobile and power sensitive applications by eliminating the weight and breakability of glass used in LCD displays.

The text display contains only two lines of six characters each, and it shows a digital clock when there's no activity. Combined with a flush-fitting keypad and dust-resistant design, the Motofone F3 is especially durable in active everyday use.

The Motofone F3 offers a redesigned user interface with voice prompts to guide the you quickly and easily through menu navigation, messaging, and other functions. In addition, graphical icons visually demonstrate the menu features as well as network status and battery strength. For pre-paid customers, the Motofone F3 automatically reports the status of your pre-paid account after each call or message.

This phone allows you to store contacts only on the SIM card (for 250 entries), and it provides a view of the last 20 dialed/received/missed calls. The layout of the numeric keypad resembles Motorola's SLVR phones, and it includes a large navigation pad as well as send/end keys and two soft keys. Above the display are bars showing signal strength and battery life. Other features include:

    • High-volume for call clarity in loud environments
    • Embedded polyphonic ringtones in eight voices
    • Ability to download ringtones
    • Silent vibration mode

    POS, garbage
Oh what a POS. I bought this phone thinking that I would get something simple, reliable, and no hassle. I got none of that. Went 0 for 3.

    The bad:
The phone would constantly lose cellular reception, and it would not automatically pick up. I would have to turn the phone on and off. This alone gives this phone a 0 out 5 stars. But that's not all.

The letters are blocky, so how do you send and receive text messages? 2 years later, and I'm still haven't found out.

Phone constantly needs to have the settings redone. How many freakin times do I need to tell you what time/date it is?

    The good:
There's not much covering for exterior, so if I put a single shot of BB through it, it'll probably render it unusable, which is a whole lot better than that being "usable" but being a piece of garbage that frustrates. Not it'll be just a piece of garbage.

I haven't explored further into this trash, but if I did, I'd probably find other things to go off on it. Oh an also, the date format is in Euro/Australian form (whatever, I don't what standard they use, but it's not American).

    Very simple, Kinda iffy
When i bought this phone i did not expect much except a phone that would answer calls and could make them. I found out that this was not a good phone for that. I was replacing a some what broken 2nd Gen Razr by Moto. That phone even somewhat broken got better service then this phone so i have already switched back to the Razr, I used the phone for about 2 weeks before i gave up because i was droping calls which never happened with my razr. The calls were being made in the same areas so i expected the same signal strength but i have not gotten that.

    Motorola Motofone
Basic phone..not really good for txtng if you like to txt..Ive used it for like 2 months now and the battery is starting to give up, only take 3-4days for a full charge even if i dnt use it..used to be 5-8days bfor i charge it again..so that's the only problem i got so far..

    horrible signal
this is the worst phone I've ever had.
It cannot receive any calls now, and I can hardly call other people.
Very very bad signal! and something wrong with the phone book.
the screen blacks out frequently. like suddenly dies.

    horrible!
    I wanna return it back.

I wanna rate it with no star~~

Easy to use, sturdy, good battery life.
If you want a plain telephone, without any extras, this is the ticket. It is light and sturdy, has good battery life and a highly readable screen, good sensitivity and an excellent speakerphone. I use my phone only occasionally and only for calls. I have a T-Mobile prepaid account, and have been spending less than per month over the last three years. My original phone died, but I simply moved the SIM card over to the F3 the T-Mobile service started right up, calling list and all. If you want to use your phone for text messages or browsing the internet, this is not for you, but if you want a cheap, easy to use and very serviceable GSM phone, I doubt if there is anything better available.

One proviso: Amazon lists this as an international version, and I guess this is true because I presume it can be used in Canada where I have used my T-Mobile service occasionally. It may also be useful in Mexico and other countries in this hemisphere. However if you want to use it in Europe you will be out of luck. This phone runs on 850/1900 bands and in Europe you will need 900/1800.
